Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC)

The Dewey Decimal Classification system divides knowledge into ten main subject categories or fields of study.

Each of the ten main categories comprises ten divisions, each with ten sub-divisions.

Example:

200 (Religion) is a main category
230 (Dogmatic Theology) is a division of the main category
231 (God) is a sub-division within the division

The three basic numbers are followed by other numbers placed after a decimal point. These indicate specific topics within the sub-division, e.g.

231.1 (God the Father)

The WCC class marks comprise the Dewey No. followed either by the first three letters of the author’s name (or of the title, if the work is anonymous), or by an alphanumerical code.  Reference books also carry the prefix “Ref”.
